According to an AP report yesterday ("Nephew of Honduran interim president shot dead"), "Honduras has the highest homicide rate in Central America,...Some 7,235 people in the country of 7.7 million were killed in 2008, a 25 percent surge from 2007." And guess who was president at the time? Yes, you guessed it...Mel Zelaya was president and this sickening statistic was happening under his watch.
What did Comandante Cowboy do about the spiraling crime rate? Nothing as far as I know...He was too busy travelling and enjoying being president to care about the destruction of Honduran civil society...

Not to be too pessimistic, but... it's worse lately since the coup. I know of three people shot lately who were friends or neighbors of friends in good 'hoods. That's all in one week, too.
I can't say about Tegus, but the La Ceiba police chief told a friend awhile back that crime was way reduced in La Ceiba. I wish that OCAVI would update their statistics -- though the only one which might be reliable is homicides. We all know that most other crimes don't get reported.
I CAN SAY ITS DEFINETLY WORST,I RECENTLY WAS A VICTIM OF CRIME MY CAR WAS STOLEN FROM MY RESEDENCE BY SEVERAL MEN IN 3 EXPENSIVE CARS WEARING MILITARY BOOTS IN BROAD DAYLIGHT,AND SADLY DISCOVERD THAT IN HONDURAS YOU CANNOT COUNT ON ANYBODY TO HELP WHEN YOU NEED THEM PEOPLE HERE ARE AFRAID OF THE CRIMINALS AND ALSO THE POLICE AND WILL NOT HELP YOU TO SOLVE THE CRIME THEY WILL TURN THERE BACKS ON YOU BECAUSE THERE AFRAID OF THERE CULTURE AND THE SYSTEM WHICH SUCKS BEWARE AMERICANS STAY AWAY FROM HONDURAS YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN,DO NOT EXPECT YOUR FRIENDS,POLICE,EMBASSY WILL HELP YOU,YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN HERE DONT FORGET IT.
